Georgian Dublin must have been invading the dreams of Cavan-born artist Evelyn Sorohan for a while now; the exhibition of her work at the London College, Dublin on Merrion Square fuses the patterns and textures of the era with modern painting technology and a starkly contemporary feel. Commissioned especially by the London College for a permanent exhibition, Sorohan's pieces are fractured and fragmented, just as you might expect the artwork in a centuries-old building to be. But like many of the city's listed Georgian buildings, the London College is in immaculate condition, and the broken lines running through Sorohan's imaginative revisiting of frescoes and plasterwork are strictly for effect. The effect is one of layering, transposing, and striking juxtaposition; both the feel of the time and a sort of gratitude that its piety has passed on emanate from Sorohan's canvasses. Though none of the works in the exhibition is for sale, they are well worth a peek (26 Merrion Square, Mon-Sat, 8am-7pm).

About me

I am a conceptual climate artist and teacher. I draw on my educational background to create innovative exploratory Climate Art. I start the process by investigating scientific Climate Data coupled with studying flora and fauna climate indicators in my local rural environment in Kilmaley, Co. Clare. I also work as a creative associate with the Arts Council’s Creative School’s Team. Along side my studio work I develop participatory Arts Based Climate programmes for schools. Collaboration and interdisciplinary learning is important to my work. I’m currently working with Sean Nos Dancer, Edwina Guckian on an audio representation of Climate Change. With my work with Broadford NS I’m fortunate to be working along the Glass Artist Kathryna Cuschieri in developing a Green School and mural with the children. Last year I worked with scientist Dr Alice D’ Arcy and Clare Education Centre. The cross pollination of ideas and methods greatly enhances my work.

To learn about my third solo exhibiton ‘Plastic Imprints’ 2018/2019 please watch a video of my process.

“Sorohan’s exhibition, Plastic Imprints was the most successful art exhibition we have had in the Clare Museum”

John Rattigan (museum curator)

Over eight hundred adults and children looked and responded to the exhibition. It was a resounding success. I am deeply humbled as the artist that so many people were interested in my process and work. This motivates me to continue creating and teaching as a contemporary artist. Thank you sincerely.

Testimonials

Evelyn has a unique style of painting. As well as the usual application of acrylics she has introduced her own medium; plastic to her process. In a walk by the seashore she collects debris and transforms these into new creations. Blues, greens and yellow plastic bottles, bits of shells, sea grass are gathered. Out of these, when melted with her gas burner, they become her own palette. She applies these with paint onto a board or canvas. Evelyn's creativity is both exciting and challenging.

Testimonials

We commissioned Evelyn to do a large painting for our sitting room. She visited and took a myriad of photos of the room. She spoke about her process and the colour palette she would use. Over three months she created a piece ‘ Ode to Colm and Niamh’ It’s a mixed media painting made out of her signature plastics, acrylic and resin in celebration of our lives.

Testimonials

We bought pieces at Evelyn’s exhibition in AXIS, ‘From There to Here’. The piece I love best is a memory piece she made in honour of or grandparents. Evelyn collected artefacts, photos and other memorabilia and created a beautiful collage. It now has pride of place in our home.
